Kelvin Hall student Tom Lewis took the opportunity to turn his hand to the technical side of Shield Security’s work – helping our team develop a new product for a key customer.

The 14-year-old was the latest in a long line of East Yorkshire students to be given the opportunity to sample working life at the company’s Hessle headquarters.

His experience came at a time when the focus was on the technical development of a new alarm product, giving him a rare opportunity to be involved in the planning, development, and testing stages.

As always, Shield ensured their temporary new worker was able to sample all areas of the business, from behind the scenes in the 24 hour control centre, to the administration and organisation behind running a business with hundreds of employees and security guards operating on sites across the north of England.

“It was a really good experience working at Shield,” said Tom.

“I was made to feel part of the team from day one, and that has made me comfortable in my surroundings. It was my first time in a business environment and it was great to learn how a business operates day to day.

“When we had the option of choosing where we did our work experience, I chose Shield because it is a well-known business in the area.

“It was interesting working with the technical team and seeing how they developed their products and tested them. It was also great to see the control room in operation, it’s quite fascinating to see what is caught on camera and how they are monitored.”

Dave Frank, managing director of Shield, says the company will continue committing to supporting young people to gain work experience.

“It is key to give people the chance to experience life at a business, and we continue to have many students here on work experience, and through our mentoring scheme with Archbishop Sentamu Academy.

“Our apprentice Aaliyah won the employee of the year award at the Hull Daily Mail Business Awards only last November, which just goes to show how far young people can go, and what a positive impact they can have at businesses, if given the chance.”
